Tonight I attended a training on a brand new program being introduced. It is being phased in and as such most of the attendees in the room hadn't had a chance/bothered to take a look at it prior to attending. I was quite the opposite and had spent a fair amount of time checking out the plan, the resources, and where some of the opportunities and challenges were.
So fast forward to the 1 hour training. The trainer was engaging, realistic, but most of all enthusiastic about why the shift to this new way of doing our work makes sense... yes it is going to be a lot of work, confusing, and it isn't perfect, but the WHY it makes sense combined with the enthusiasm for it, left everyone curious and interested to try it out.
I believe in Simon Sinek's work of Starting with Why applies to training in that if we can convince people of why we want to share this information or idea with them, then they will be able to understand how we are going to do it and what it is going to take of them to contribute to this change.
However if you miss the enthusiasm in this equation of Why+ How... you won't get the What you are looking for.
